Subject: Human Resources/General Counsel
As you know, Human Resources, with the exception of Benefits and the Employee Assistance Program, has been administered under the Vice President and General Counsel. With Bob Avery's departure to take a position at Roger Williams University, I plan to institute a study using outside consultants to recommend the best human resources and legal affairs structure for NJIT, including the most appropriate unit to exercise responsibility for legal issues surrounding intellectual property management (currently the responsibility of Legal and Employment Affairs) .
While this study is being established and is underway, the Department of Human Resources and the Office of Legal and Employment Affairs will be separated for administrative purposes. Rodney Bossert, Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, will continue to serve in that capacity, and Holly Stern, Associate General Counsel and Assistant Vice President for Legal and Employment Affairs, will serve as Interim General Counsel responsible for the University's legal affairs and for the Office of Legal and Employment Affairs. Both Rod and Holly will report directly to the President. In this interim period, all other activities related to human resources and legal affairs, i.e., Benefits, Employee Assistance Program, and counsel for intellectual property management, will remain in their current administrative units.
We will keep you informed as the study progresses, and will seek input from various units and individuals on campus who interact with the Department of Human Resources and the Office of Legal and Employment Affairs.
I look forward to working with Holly in her new capacity, and directly with Rod, as we move toward building consensus on how the activities for which they will be responsible in the interim are permanently structured.
