Subject: FY 07 Budget - OPEIU Salary Expense Reduction Agreement
As you are aware, we have been actively engaged in identifying strategies that will help balance the FY 2007 Budget. In addition to reduction of direct State support, NJIT has internal commitments such as increased utilities cost, that affect the budget. Collectively, there is a $17 million impact on the budget. Several steps have already been taken to address the matter. Additional steps will need to be taken to develop a balanced operating budget. There is considerable information on this subject on our web site–my.njit.edu.
I am pleased to announce that the university and OPIEU have reached a tentative agreement that provides a significant measure of financial relief for the FY 2007 budget. The essence of the agreement is that OPIEU will forgo merit raises in FY 2007 and the university will allow the OPIEU office workers to have a four-day, 8:30 to 4:30 work schedule for this summer.
While this arrangement will impact the operations of the university, it represents a good example of labor-management cooperation that is mutually beneficial. We thank the members of the OPIEU bargaining unit for their efforts.
The University office hours remains as previously announced – that is 8:30-5:00, Monday to Thursday.
While the details of the MOA are being finalized, OPEIU office staff will follow an 8:30 to 4:30 schedule until further notice. Should special circumstances warrant, a supervisor in need of coverage after 4:30 should notify the affected staff person of the need as far in advance as practical and OPIEU staff are expected to remain until 5:00.
