Subject: NJIT Budget Development Update
As a follow-up to my message of March 23 outlining the impact of the Governor’s proposed budget on NJIT, I wanted to let you know that we will be taking a comprehensive, long term view of the University budget and what it supports. It will be the work of the Budget Task Force, mentioned in my March 23 message to the University community and whose membership I anticipate announcing this week or early next, and Senior Staff to craft recommendations on what actions to take that will allow us to address the impact of the Governor’s proposed budget and future budgets going forward.
While the work mentioned above gets underway, we will need to take carefully considered precautionary measures to manage the remaining portion of this year’s (FY06) budget as prudently as possible and keep options open by limiting commitments against the FY07 budget insofar as possible until we are confident those commitments can be honored.
The impact of the proposed State funding reduction requires that we act and behave in ways that are not “business as usual.” Such change, some of which will need to occur quickly as mentioned above to minimize disruption next year, will be very challenging. I have every confidence though that if we pull together as a community dedicated to the University’s best interests, we will meet with success in addressing the core needs of the University’s students, faculty, and staff, and at the same time prepare the foundation for strengthening even further NJIT’s potential for continued achievement.
