Subject: University Summer Schedule 2013

In prior years, NJIT has worked to offset rising energy expenditures by providing the staff with a compressed work week during the summer months.

While lower energy cost savings were initially realized, over the years such savings have decreased.  Additionally, as the university seeks to advance the research component of its mission, the university needs to provide greater access to our research facilities, as well as office support throughout the entire week.

Accordingly, for the 2013 summer months, the period June 3, 2013 through August 16, 2013, each department is to develop a schedule to afford employees a compressed work week, which also assures that the department remains open for the entire work week, Monday through Friday. 

Each department supervisor should discuss this operational change with his or her respective staff.  As you begin this discussion please comply with the following parameters:

  • The four day work week should be a fixed schedule for each employee that will be either, Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday.
  • The office must remain open the entire work week, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
  • In administering this schedule, efficacy of university operations must be considered first priority.

NJIT campus will be closed Monday, May 27, 2013 in observance of Memorial Day.  The university will resume its regular five day schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 19, 2013.

Absences during the summer months will be charged as was done in last summer's schedule, i.e., 35 hours for a week. Accordingly, employees who utilize full day vacation or sick leave will have their leave banks charged with 8.75 hours per day during the period listed above. Employees who utilize full day personal leave or floating holidays will have their leave banks charged with 7 hours per day during the period listed above. (Those employees on a 37.5 hour work week or 40 hour work week will be charged accordingly.)

 

This schedule affects non-aligned staff personnel and is intended to apply to members of the various collective bargaining units, provided such units mutually agree to the summer schedule as outlined above, and subject further to any applicable contractual limitations, workloads permitting.

 

During the summer schedule, paychecks will be distributed on Thursday. Please note this change makes it even more important that the payroll-processing schedule be followed to ensure timely payments.
