Embracing the Cloud: New Approaches for Delivering Campus IT Services—Strategy and Policy Development

"Cloud Computing" is the next big paradigm shift for delivery of IT services.  This talk will discuss the cloud metaphor and illustrate how outsourcing, open source, SaaS, virtualization and other concepts offer new approaches for delivering IT services at NJIT and beyond.  Examples will illustrate innovations and possibilities for instruction, research and general IT support.

Institutional research offers a broad range of services to the university. These include university facts you may need for research proposals or applications; assessment studies for the evaluation of student learning outcomes or institutional effectiveness; and a new online survey tool. This session will discuss the diverse aspects of institutional research and detail the ways in which it can assist your research, teaching, and administrative undertakings.

“Electronic Portfolios”

This workshop will explore the use of student ePortfolios.  The presentation will focus on the Mahara platform accompanying Moodle, NJIT's core learning management system. Because there is national, regional, and program emphasis on assessment, the use of ePortfolios is outcomes assessment will also be covered, and models of design and measurement will be provided.

Using Learning Objects Across the Curriculum

In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in different technologies and computer applications that have enabled instructors to provide additional learning outside the classroom.  This workshop will describe the implementation of a learning object model used in a face to face classroom, where videos were created to enhance the learning process.  Examples of creating the learning objects and videos will be shown, as well as the problems and the amount effort involved in developing and creating them.

Spiraling Costs of Scholarly Journals & the Future of Open Access Publications; what can a faculty member do?

Each year our institutions can afford to renew fewer subscriptions than the year before, eroding instantaneous access to important scholarly papers. Open access and mandated public access hold promise for breaking this cycle and creating new paradigms for scholarly publishing. Come participate in a discussion of current issues and collaborative strategies to address them.
