NJIT is New Jersey's public technological research university. Research funding has grown dramatically over the last decade. In 2012, research expenditures were more than $102 million. The university's research efforts are the core that binds together three other mission elements:
INSTRUCTION: Researchers engaged in the forefront of science and engineering infuse knowledge and enthusiasm in their classroom teaching, and involve students in work that takes them outside of the traditional classroom experience. PhD degrees are offered in 19 disciplines.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Our researchers work on problems distilled from the practice of their professions. As a result their accomplishments fuel economic growth - defining new products and services and generating new businesses. Interactions with industry set a context for scholarly research that has both intellectual integrity and utility.
PUBLIC SERVICE: Knowledge developed in our faculty and students becomes an invaluable asset guiding state and municipal leaders in policy formation and improved operation of government services and civil infrastructure.
Enhancing the Campus
Physical improvements to the campus and its surrounding neighborhood are just the beginning of the strategic goals related to the quality of life on campus. The Campus Gateway Project remains one of NJIT's key planning initiatives to improve the amenities available to the campus and local community. Information Everywhere is NJIT's name for the ubiquitous computing that has changed everything about life in the 21st century, from the way we work and learn to the way we interact with each other. NJIT researchers are working to create the tools to help the digital world function and to evaluate the impact of new technologies on society. The environment has long been a key area for NJIT. In the 1980s when the university opened itsYork Center for Environmental Engineering and Science, teaching and research concentrated on hazardous substance management and pollution remediation and prevention. The focus has broadened in recent years to apply sustainability principles to building and design, transportation and other fields, to green chemistry, and to ecology and conservation. Read more.
Life and Healthcare Science and Engineering
In just 10 years since its establishment, the Department of Biomedical Engineering has emerged as one of the university�s strongest departments with research programs that are already nationally recognized in such areas as tissue engineering and rehabilitation medicine.
