Kimberly Lam, a graduate of River Dell High School, is a sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering. An active member of the NJIT community, she participates in several school clubs. She loves watching and playing many sports, and above all, she loves helping others.Major/Graduation Year:
Mechanical Engineering, 2012
Hometown:
River Edge, NJ
Why NJIT?
I chose NJIT for several reasons: it has a demanding engineering program, it is affordable, and it is close to many hotspots. I love being a short train ride away from NYC and other colleges.
Why Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical engineering is the broadest engineering discipline. As students we learn about aeronautics, automotives, electronics, power/energy, and more. There is a lot to learn with ME, which is exactly the reason why I chose it as a major; I love to learn! Not to mention having an ME background degree will also make me more marketable once I graduate.
What do you like best at NJIT?
I like the friends I have made, and the people I have met. I also like the school’s grilled cheese sandwich, hands down the best food at the dining hall!
Why Connections Miniversity?
I really have enjoyed my first semester at NJIT, and second semester has been even better so far. I want to show future students what great things NJIT has to offer, and I want to be a person they can always come to for guidance during their freshmen year.
Clubs & Organizations:
I am in the Student Activities Council (SAC), which is a club that hosts fun events to make students want to stay on-campus. I am also part of the Hall Council where we voice issues that affect resident life in the dorms, and Honors Social Committee where we talk about planning events for the members of the Honors College.
Greatest Accomplishment:
My senior year of high school, I tutored a middle school student 1-2 times each week of the school year. I could tell that he was really struggling in math. Through reviews and practice problems, I helped him raise his grade from a “C” to a “B”. He told me how happy he was, and it felt great knowing that I was actually able to help him.
Career Goals:
After I graduate, I plan to work in the industry, most likely concentrating in power/energy and relating it to the environment; developing alternative energy sources, making existing power generators more efficient, etc. Afterwards, I want to become a high school teacher, either in science or math.
Favorite Music:
I like all sorts of music! If I really had to choose, though, I would listen to alternative rock. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Weezer are a couple of my favorite bands.
Favorite Movie:
Undercover Brother; that movie is hilarious! I could watch it all day long.
Favorite Book:
A Hope in the Unseen by Ron Suskind; it’s a great book that shows how with hard work, determination, and a little bit of hope, one can achieve almost anything even if starting out from the bottom.
Favorite Class:
Gym, haha. I’m joking. My favorite class so far would have to be Physics; it’s very conceptual which makes it difficult to learn and understand, but it forces you to think critically and analyze the situation. Everything matches and falls into place.
