Placement Testing

The placement assessments are essential in determining the first level course in mathematics, English and other related courses that students will take during their first semester.  

Placement Testing

The Associate Director of Placement Testing administers the English and Math placement assessments to all incoming students as needed, remotely.

The English Placement Assessment is used to determine your first-semester English course placement.  There are two parts to the English Placement Assessment :

  1. English Placement Assessment-Essay​ 
  2. English Placement Assessment-Survey

 

The Math Placement Assessment is used to determine your first-semester math course placement. There are three sections on the math placement assessment :

  1. Basic Algebra
  2. Advance Algebra
  3. Trigonometry & Elementary Functions  

 

We strongly recommend that you prepare by reviewing the subject areas on the math placement assessment. Please review the following information to assist in preparation:

(Reminder: No calculator usage on the math placement assessment!)

In order to obtain access to the placement assessment you must claim your UCID at least 48 hours prior to the date of the placement assessment if you have not already done so.

Please Note: If you require accommodations under the American with Disabilities Act, please contact Ms. Marsha Williams-Nicholas of the Office of Accessibility Resources & Services (OARS) at oars@njit.edu or call (973) 596-2994. Once approved, OARS will communicate with the Placement Testing Office the appropriate accommodations prior to your access to the assessment(s).

**ATTENTION**

For incoming First-Year students enrolling for the Fall 2025, once you have paid your deposit, you will be notified via email about how to access the Placement Assessment.  Transfer students only, please register here to take the placement assessment starting March 17th. (Please Note: You must access the registration form by using  your NJIT email or you will be denied access.)  Reminder: In order to obtain access to the placement assessment you must claim your UCID at least 48 hours prior to the date of the placement assessment if you have not already done so.
