The Department of Public Safety, conveniently located at 154 Summit St. on the first level of the Parking Deck, provides security 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The 66-member department includes a director of public safety/chief of police, deputy chief, lieutenants, sergeants, police officers, public safety officers and an administrative support staff. All of the NJIT police officers have graduated from an accredited police academy, are certified by the Police Training Commission and have full powers of arrest. Implementing a variety of patrol techniques, police officers cover the campus in vehicles, on bicycle, and on foot to maximize visibility. They serve and protect the campus community by enforcing state laws and city ordinances, as well as university rules, policies and regulations.
Public safety officers are posted in parking lots as well as in and around campus buildings, and assist police personnel at special events sponsored by student and other organizations.
All officers receive in-service training in firearms, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and bicycle and three-wheel motor scooter patrol.
University police officers are armed and have full arrest power throughout the State of New Jersey. Patrolling the campus on foot, bicycles, and in motor vehicles, officers are responsible for the safety and well being of the university community and their invited guests. The university police maintain a special mutual assistance agreement with the Rutgers University Police. The goal of the agreement is to achieve increased security in the area of both campuses through a program of shared resources. Strategies include a joint shuttle bus service, expanded vehicle patrols, and back-up personnel for assistance during emergencies or special events.
The university police also receive back-up support from the police departments of the City of Newark, New Jersey Transit, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Essex County College, and the Essex County Prosecutor.
