What is the IRS Data Retrieval Tool?
The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows students and parents to access the IRS tax return information needed to complete the FAFSA and transfer the data directly into their form from the IRS website. We strongly recommend using the IRS DRT to transfer data from the IRS into your FAFSA because it is easy, fast, and accurate. It also allows hassle-free processing for your financial aid application. Please watch this video to learn more. In order to complete your FAFSA and use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you and your parent(s) will need to have your 2021 tax return filed prior to completing a FAFSA application. If you do not use this tool, you may be asked to provide a federal tax return or tax return transcript from the IRS.
