Veterans and members of the New Jersey National Guard must contact Ms. Maryann Sawka 973-596-3237 and complete a Veteran's Certification Form if they are eligible for benefits and wish utilize them during the semester.

The Office of the Registrar is responsible for processing applications for the  Department of Veterans Affairs on the behalf of our veteran population. 

Determining Eligibility

NJIT students that receive veterans educational benefits need to know about several important procedures and policies.  If you are veteran or a dependent interested in veterans educational benefits or are currently receiving them, please read the following information carefully.  If you have applied for veterans educational benefits in the past or not, your first step will be to contact the Department of Veteran Affairs toll-free at 1-888-GIBILL-1  (1-888-442-4551) or at

Routing of Application for Educational Benefits

NJIT is responsible for submitting your initial benefit application and enrollment certification to the VA.  NJIT students are required to complete a yellow card listing his/her class schedule each semester and can be find within the Student Services Mall.

After submission of your enrollment certification to the VA you can expect payment approximately 4-6 weeks.  If you have not received payment or which to know the date you were certified, please feel free to contact the Veterans Coordinator at 973-596-3241 or you can contact the VA directly at  (1-888-442-4551).

Responsibility of the Veteran

It is your responsibility to notify the Registrar's Office and inform the Veterans Coordinator, Maryann Sawka, of any change of status that may affect your VA benefits. This includes adds/ drops, withdrawals, change of program and incomplete grades.  You should only enroll in courses that will be used towards your degree program or provide me with a letter requiring you to enroll in classes that do not lead to your degree.  If the VA reviews your records, after you receive your first check and you did not report your withdrawal to Office of the Registrar you will be responsible for any overpayment.  The VA will send you a letter informing you of any overpayments.  As a veteran who accepted benefits, you will be directly responsible for any overpayments you may receive and the VA will recoup any money that you have already been paid.

Important:  All students who are receiving either the Montgomery GI BILL Active duty or Selected Reserve MUST now verify their enrollments monthly to receive payments.

The verification can be done either by using the WEB Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) or by using an automated

Telephone system (IVR) at 1-877-823-2378 and follow the prompts.

Chapter 31 Veterans

Chapter 31 veterans  must contact the VA Regional office, Newark NJ and speak with Barbara Wood,  the Chapter 31 veterans' representative.

Certification Procedures for Chapter 31 Veterans

Once you contact Ms. Wood she will NJIT the VAF 29-1905 each semester eligible veterans are enrolled at NJIT.   Ms. Wood will set up an appointment with with each veteran and will prepare the VAF 29-1905 and send it to NJIT.  NJIT will confirm attendance and send a copy of your schedule along with the completed VAF 29-1905 and inform the Bursar's Office that the VA Regional Office will be paying your tuition for the semester.
