Why is NJIT undergoing a significant reorganization of senior leadership?

Universities that conduct self-analysis of their leadership practices often realize a range of organizational and individual benefits. NJIT has voluntarily undergone this process of structured self-assessment, reflection, and feedback to evaluate leadership effectiveness and identify areas for growth. The university is on a powerful upswing; the goal is for NJIT to maximize its potential as an effective, distinguished and high performing polytechnic institution.

A reorganization introduces new ideas and innovative approaches to address complex challenges, such as financial constraints, marketing, enrollment shifts, alumni relations and technological changes. Moreover, such a plan is designed to enable more efficient operations at the highest levels of NJIT.

University leaders have designed a plan to clarify responsibilities and reporting relationships, improving communication and accountability throughout the institution.

What role does the university President play in the restructuring?

President Teik C. Lim has been the architect of the restructuring in partnership with leadership members, leading the plan and crafting the revised organizational chart of his senior leadership team. The President will continue working closely with the Board of Trustees and all other stakeholders to ensure the restructuring supports the Strategic Plan 2030.

As NJIT prepared for this reorganization, what has it learned about the structure of the university leadership?

The NJIT president has more direct reports than is typical at peer institutions, which is often diverting time and attention from strategic priorities necessary to advance the institution. Through this reorganization, NJIT’s leadership team will have more cohesion and shared direction, working in optimal alignment to meet long-term goals and allowing President Lim to focus more on raising private and public capital for various programs and to continue to build a tradition of giving to the university.

Some believe NJIT is in a significant cultural recalibration. Is that true?

We believe so. NJIT has been deliberately moving from a centralized, top-down leadership model to a more inclusive and participatory approach. Navigating this welcomed transition is requiring a leadership alignment and decision-making processes among the president, senior leaders, and the Board of Trustees.

How will this transition affect NJIT’s ongoing success?

There is a great sense of pride in the university’s trajectory and the significant progress it has made in recent years—particularly in the areas of enrollment growth, research advancement, and academic quality, and external engagement. There is also deep pride in its long-standing commitment to expanding access and opportunity for first-generation and historically underserved students. This legacy is a defining aspect of the institution’s identity and continues to inspire both internal and external stakeholders. The university is widely recognized as an affordable, high-value option, known for delivering strong career outcomes and a compelling return on investment.

Through this important restructuring, NJIT’s leadership will build upon the success already achieved by putting the spotlight in areas where the university can maximize opportunity and unearth new partnerships that were previously left unidentified.

How will I know if my unit will be affected by the restructuring?

If your unit will be transitioning to a new division, your manager or the appropriate unit leader will inform you of any impact to your area. Note that academic departments and colleges will not be reorganized.

I am employed in a unit that is transitioning to a new division. How will that impact my job?

For the vast majority of employees in the units affected by the reorganization, there will be no impact on positions directly related to the transition. In some cases, such as for the transitioning unit’s head, new supervisors will be assigned. Senior Vice Presidents will work collaboratively with transitioning units over the coming months to understand and provide input on unit goals and priorities. Additionally, in some instances, there may be a need to relocate some units to different space on campus.
