Move Out Waste

Led by the NJIT Student Senate in partnership with the Office of Sustainability, the Move Out Waste Initiative repurposes food, furniture, clothes, and more that would otherwise be thrown into the trash by students moving out of residence halls into meaningful donations. 

Operations

Each year stressed students juggle the end of the semester with moving out of their residence halls. In all the rush and panic of moving out, they hurriedly discard high-quality items including anything from electronics to clothing. The Office of Sustainability and NJIT Student Senate's Move Out Waste initiative provides these students with an easy, low effort way to reduce this unnecessary waste and give these unused/lightly used items a new home. 

In the Spring of 2026, the Move Out Waste committee of the Student Senate set up donation bins across campus buildings and residence halls in waves. Each wave focused on a different category of waste including food, electronics, clothing, and appliances. They were then sorted and donated to local food pantries and shelters.
