Program Details

The Applied Statistics M.S. program is designed to advance students pursuing a statistics-oriented career in industries where basic statistical skills and knowledge of contemporary methods of data analysis and modeling are required.

 

Additionally, for graduate students who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in Applied Probability and Statistics, the M.S. program will equip them with the basic training in foundations needed for further graduate studies and independent research. It will also benefit practicing engineers and professionals seeking to advance their knowledge of statistical methods.

 

We expect that students and/or graduates of the Applied Statistics M.S. program will exhibit and/or engage in:

  • Solve Real-world Problems: Our students will specialize in methods for collecting data by sampling methods and in statistical modeling and analysis, with a view to drawing meaningful conclusions from data.

While students in the program gain a variety of skills and theoretical knowledge helpful for launching a career in statistical research, we specifically aim for students to meet the following learning outcomes:

  • Ability to apply a wide range of statistical methods and understand the results at a graduate level.
  • Ability to effectively communicate research results and statistical methods to specialists in the field, as well as non-specialist audiences.
  • Ability to apply advanced statistical theory and techniques to develop independent research projects and support collaborative research teams.
  • Ability to execute, analyze and interpret statistical research studies that inform policy decisions in government and the private sector.
  • Ability to manipulate basic and complex data structures.
  • Ability to extend current techniques or develop and implement statistical models as needed to solve current challenges in data analysis.
  • Ability to use modern statistical software and programming language for assessments, decision-making, and sharing of information.
  • Ability to identify strengths and weaknesses of statistical methods used in a collaborative research setting.
