Program Details

The undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Engineering (MTEN), with the goal of producing graduates who accomplish the following within 3-5 years of graduation:

1. Engineering Practice: Graduates of the Materials Engineering program are successfully engaged in the professional practice of materials engineering in industry, academia, government, or research laboratories, applying fundamental principles of materials science and engineering to design, analyze, select, and improve materials, and related processes and products across diverse application areas.

2. Professional Growth and Leadership: Graduates of the Materials Engineering program advance their careers through continuous professional development, including graduate study, interdisciplinary work, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning, and increasingly assume roles of technical leadership, innovation, and collaboration in materials-related fields and professions such as business, medicine, law, and education.

3. Societal Impact, Ethics, and Service: Graduates of the Materials Engineering program demonstrate professional and ethical responsibility by considering the environmental, societal, health, and safety impacts of materials solutions, and by contributing to society and the engineering profession through service, leadership, and engagement in professional, civic, or humanitarian activities.

What You Will Learn:

We specifically aim for our students to meet the following learning outcomes:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
