Program Details
The Applied Statistics M.S. program is designed to advance students pursuing a statistics-oriented career in industries where basic statistical skills and knowledge of contemporary methods of data analysis and modeling are required.
Additionally, for graduate students who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in Applied Probability and Statistics, the M.S. program will equip them with the basic training in foundations needed for further graduate studies and independent research. It will also benefit practicing engineers and professionals seeking to advance their knowledge of statistical methods.
We expect that students and/or graduates of the Applied Statistics M.S. program will exhibit and/or engage in:
- Professionalism: Our students work on developing leadership, collaboration, networking and other professional skills that are needed by today’s top statisticians.
- Academic Excellence: Our students will be passionate about advancing their knowledge of statistical methods to become an asset in fields such as medicine and pharmaceuticals, environmental sciences, finance, government and market research.
- Solve Real-world Problems: Our students will specialize in methods for collecting data by sampling methods and in statistical modeling and analysis, with a view to drawing meaningful conclusions from data.

While students in the program gain a variety of skills and theoretical knowledge helpful for launching a career in statistical research, we specifically aim for students to meet the following learning outcomes:
- Ability to apply a wide range of statistical methods and understand the results at a graduate level.
- Ability to effectively communicate research results and statistical methods to specialists in the field, as well as non-specialist audiences.
- Ability to apply advanced statistical theory and techniques to develop independent research projects and support collaborative research teams.
- Ability to execute, analyze and interpret statistical research studies that inform policy decisions in government and the private sector.
- Ability to manipulate basic and complex data structures.
- Ability to extend current techniques or develop and implement statistical models as needed to solve current challenges in data analysis.
- Ability to use modern statistical software and programming language for assessments, decision-making, and sharing of information.

Program Details
In the Mathematical Sciences B.S program, students will gain a strong, fundamental understanding of both applied and pure mathematics, which they can apply to a diverse set of concentrated career fields including mathematics, natural sciences, computer science, social sciences or business. The program’s objective is to prepare students for graduate studies or successful careers in mathematical science and related fields.
Students and/or graduates of the Mathematical Sciences B.S. program will exhibit and/or engage in the following:
- Ethical and Professional Behavior: Our students will develop skills to effectively communicate, lead and collaborate in a team dynamic and act ethically in a professional setting.
- Chosen Research Focus: Students work closely with their academic advisor to achieve their academic and career focus through program concentrations in Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Computational Mathematics, Mathematical Biology and Mathematics of Finance and Actuarial Science.
- Academic Excellence: Our students will build the academic foundation for a successful career in fields such as mathematical finance, mathematical computing, statistics or actuarial science.

Alongside NJIT’s distinguished faculty, students of the Mathematical Sciences B.S. program will develop and enhance their computational and analytical skills to become highly qualified professionals who can enter productive and in-demand careers in industry, education, and research in New Jersey and throughout the U.S.
Though the program encourages students to hone various skills and knowledge they are interested in its diverse concentrations, graduates from the B.S. in Mathematical Sciences program should all meet the following learning outcomes:
- Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics and mathematical methods.
- Ability to identify well-defined features of quantifiable systems and extract useful inferences from data.
- Ability to formulate a mathematical model of a quantifiable system.
- Ability to use mathematics to solve a mathematical model or problem; in particular, an ability to extract quantitative data and information from a mathematical model. Depending on the concentration, the mathematical models that are studied are drawn from physics, biological sciences or finance. Extracting features from data is particularly stressed in the Applied Statistics concentration.
- Ability to distinguish between a good (or well-founded) model and a bad or (poorly-founded) model.
- Ability to communicate effectively; in particular, an ability to communicate concepts and methods of mathematical sciences and their relation to problems in other fields of science and engineering.
- Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary group.
- A recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in lifelong learning.

Program Details
The Mathematical Sciences Ph.D. program is designed to prepare students for advanced independent research in the mathematical sciences that is directed to the solution of modern scientific, technological and industrial problems. The program has three tracks to meet students’ specific professional aspirations: Applied Mathematics Track, Applied Probability and Statistics Track, and Pure Mathematics Track.
Through coursework and independent study, students will gain the vital knowledge in mathematics and statistics needed to teach at college-level, conduct strong independent research in their areas of expertise or succeed in a range of diverse careers within government and private sector environments.
Students of the Ph.D. program will display:
- Professionalism: Motivated students will sharpen leadership, collaboration and communication skills to successfully communicate their work to a wide audience (including non-specialists).
- Academic Excellence: Students can work alongside department faculty with research accomplishments in their field to successfully pass the qualifying Ph.D. exams, conduct advanced independent research and complete their dissertation work.
- Commitment to Career Development: Through activities, such as a regular colloquium series and seminars, students will continuously explore the latest innovations in the mathematical sciences.
What You Will Learn:
Graduates of the Mathematical Sciences Ph.D. program are trained to a very high level of mathematical expertise and will have acquired essential skills in mathematical and/or statistical modeling, computational techniques and research methods, in addition to in-depth expert knowledge of their own thesis research field. At graduation, students have demonstrated the capacity for independent and in-depth research (evidenced by their doctoral dissertation and its defense) and should be prepared to move on to a professional career as a mathematician in an academic, business or industrial context.
The learning outcomes expected of graduates include:
- Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, and mathematical/statistical methods.
- Ability to identify well-defined features of quantifiable systems.
- Ability to formulate a mathematical or statistical model of a quantifiable system, and to interpret and criticize existing models of such systems.
- Ability to use mathematics effectively and efficiently to solve a mathematical model or problem. In particular, an ability to extract quantitative data and information from a mathematical model.
- Ability to carry out independent research on a chosen topic, of a depth and quality sufficient to produce results worthy of publication in peer-reviewed journals in the field.
- Ability to communicate effectively. In particular, an ability to communicate concepts and results of the student’s own, and related, research in mathematics, and the relation to problems in other science and engineering disciplines.
- Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary group.

The Biostatistics M.S. program will have a quantitative focus and a curriculum that will appeal to students wishing to pursue careers in NJ’s thriving healthcare, life sciences, and biomedical industries, as well as in pharmaceutical research. Active participation in the M.S. program by more than 40 NJIT mathematical sciences faculty produces a stimulating academic environment, which will provide necessary experience and credentials to pursue advanced studies and research in biostatistics.
Biostatistics focuses on developing new statistical methods, as well as applying existing techniques, to interpret data about the medical and life sciences. Students will exhibit and/or engage in:

The graduate certificate in User Experience Essentials (UXE) exposes students to the process of usability testing and knowledge transfer between general audiences, technology designers, programmers, project managers, and administration.
What You Will Learn:
