It's true that women didn’t flock to technical school, but the first class to enroll as candidates for degrees in engineering did include Shirley Dodman, known to her classmates as "The Coed." The first woman to graduate was Edythe Rabbe, awarded a degree in chemical engineering in 1930.
The former Newark Orphan Asylum, now Eberhardt Hall, was purchased and renovated by the college during the lean years of the Depression and World War II.
