What Is Accessibility?
Accessibility means ensuring that all members of the university community can use our spaces, websites, and learning materials, regardless of ability. Examples include captioned video, documents compatible with screen readers, and websites that can be navigated by keyboard. Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires public institutions to provide equal access to their programs and services. A Department of Justice rule requires public universities to bring their websites, mobile applications, and digital course materials into conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, by April 26, 2027. NJIT is working to meet these requirements through the Campus Accessibility, Process and Action (CAPA) group.
About CAPA
The Campus Accessibility, Process and Action (CAPA) group is a cross-functional body dedicated to advancing accessibility across the university's physical and digital environments in support of Inclusive Excellence. CAPA carries out its work through a steering committee and three subgroups:
- Instructional/Research Accessibility: Ensuring instructional materials, course content, learning technologies, and research systems meet ADA Title II requirements by the April 2027 deadline.
- Digital and Physical Infrastructure: Ensuring university facilities, physical spaces, and non-web digital infrastructure and systems meet ADA Title II requirements by the April 2027 deadline.
- Web and Social Media: Ensuring university websites, social media, and communications channels meet ADA Title II requirements by the April 2027 deadline.
The three subgroups have the following objectives:
- Measure and Remediate Barriers: Assess digital and physical accessibility and recommend improvements in order of priority.
- Tooling and Platform Acquisition: Select and deploy a university-wide accessibility platform to support consistent review, remediation, and reporting.
-
Awareness and Professional Development: Establish an ongoing awareness and training strategy for instructors, students, and staff.
Resources and Support
Students:
The Office of Accessibility Resources and Services (OARS) provides accommodations and support for students with disabilities.
Faculty and Staff:
The three subgroups along with various groups across campus are working on providing training and support resources for enhancing NJIT’s accessibility. These resources will be posted within the Accessibility Hub at nexus.njit.edu. For now, the Hub provides access to tutorials and will soon provide links to additional support resources.
