Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal funding.
Title VI
Title VI: Non-Discrimination in Programs and Activities
“No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Title VI prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin against students of any religion when the discrimination, for example:
involves racial, ethnic, or ancestral slurs or stereotypes;
is based on a student's skin color, physical features, or style of dress that reflects both ethnic and religious traditions; or is based on the country or region where a student is from or is perceived to have come from, including, for example, discrimination based on a student's accent or name, a student's limited English proficiency, or a student speaking a language other than English.
What are NJIT's responsibilities under Title VI?
NJIT is required to respond to racial or national origin harassment that is severe or pervasive enough to deny or limit a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from the recipient’s education programs and activities (i.e., creates a hostile environment).
When NJIT knows, or reasonably should know, of possible racial or national origin harassment, we must take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate or determine what occurred. If an investigation reveals that the harassment created a hostile environment, NJIT must take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the harassment, eliminate the hostile environment, prevent its recurrence, and, as appropriate, remedy its effects
