Hazardous Materials and Dangerous Goods are substances or materials that have been determined by the Secretary of Transportation to be capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce. Some examples are:
- Laboratory chemicals including but not limited to flammable, toxic, explosive, radioactive, and cryogenic materials
- Household/Custodial materials such as paints, stains, cleaners, fuels and disinfectants
- Hidden Hazardous Materials such as rechargeable batteries contained within powered equipment, mercury in thermostats, etc.
- Biological samples, such as viruses, bacteria, human or animal blood or tissue
Shipping Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Materials without the proper training can result in major fines and penalties being imposed on the University from regulatory agencies. This is true even if the courier service fills out the paperwork for you.
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team can offer you helpful options to fit your shipping needs. EHS could guide you to the required training and references;
- EHS can research requirements for your specific case and provide feedback. We do request a 3 day notice prior to your desired shipment date. Please fill out a shipping assistance request form for this purpose.
- EHS could provide training for designated personnel if you ship specific Dangerous Goods by air more often. Please contact EHS to inquire about training.
- Please email your questions and send the required forms and documents to healthandsafety@njit.edu or call EHS at 973.596.3059.
NOTE:
NJIT Mail Services cannot handle/transport hazardous materials or dangerous goods.
