AT A GLANCE

Application fee $75, non-refundable. You can receive a fee waiver code at an NJIT international information session.
Start terms Fall (September) and Spring (January). Summer entry is not available for international students.
Decision time: master's and certificates Two to three weeks after your application is complete
When to begin: master's and certificates At least six months before your start term. The visa process takes time.
Your checklist Your status portal at connect.njit.edu/status lists the exact requirements for your program.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

NJIT uses rolling admission. We review each application as soon as it is complete, so applying early is an advantage. Your application is complete when every item on your checklist shows as received.

Master's and graduate certificate applicants must complete their application by May 1 for Fall entry or November 15 for Spring entry.

Program Fall (September) Spring (January)
Master's and graduate certificates May 1 November 15
Ph.D. December 15 October 15

After a deadline, we review applications only if space is available.

PROGRAMS AND PROGRAM LENGTH

NJIT offers master's degrees, graduate certificates and Ph.D. programs. Find every program in the Degree Finder.

F-1 students must enroll full time in every Fall and Spring semester. For graduate students, full time means at least 9 credits, usually three courses.

Program Credits Typical full-time length
Graduate certificate 12 1 to 2 semesters
Master's degree, most programs 30 3 to 4 semesters
Tech MBA 36 3 to 4 semesters
Master of Architecture (M.Arch) 90 6 semesters

The 90-credit M.Arch is for applicants with a bachelor's degree in a field other than architecture. Applicants with a degree in architecture or a closely related field may qualify for advanced standing, which shortens the program. Hillier College of Architecture and Design decides placement after admission.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Requirements vary by program. The table below lists what most master's and graduate certificate applicants submit. For Ph.D. requirements, see Ph.D. Applicants. After you apply, your status portal shows the exact requirements for your program.

Transcripts and Credential Evaluations

You do not need a credential evaluation. Upload your transcripts to your application, and we evaluate them. An existing evaluation is welcome. Upload it, or ask the agency to send it. We accept evaluations from WES, ECE and other members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).

Unofficial copies are enough for our review. If you have not finished your degree, upload your most recent transcript and send the final transcript later. Transcripts that are not in English must include an official English translation.

NJIT reviews transfer credit after you complete your first semester, not at admission.

English Language Requirements: TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo and PTE

You must show English proficiency with a qualifying test score or an approved waiver. Test scores are valid for two years from the test date.

Minimum scores:

  • TOEFL iBT: 4.0 on the new scale, or 79 on the previous scale
  • IELTS Academic: 6.5
  • Duolingo English Test: 120
  • PTE Academic: 57

You do not need a test score if you have one of the following:

  • A bachelor's degree, associate degree or high school diploma earned in person at a U.S. institution. Online programs do not qualify.
  • A degree from an institution in one of the countries listed below

NJIT does not accept medium of instruction (MOI) letters. A letter from your institution stating that courses were taught in English does not meet this requirement.

If your situation does not match these rules, contact your admissions counselor and send supporting documents.

Countries Whose Degrees Qualify for a Waiver

  • Zimbabwe

GRE and GMAT

The GRE and GMAT are optional for all master's and graduate certificate programs. If you submit scores, we consider them with your GPA for merit scholarships. Some Ph.D. programs require the GRE or GMAT. See Ph.D. Applicants.

The NJIT GRE institution code is 2513.

Final Official Documents

The documents you upload with your application are unofficial. They are enough for an admission decision. If you enroll, you must arrange for final official documents:

  • A transcript that shows your degree was awarded
  • Official score reports for any test used in your admission decision

Without these documents, you cannot register for your second semester. Your first semester is not affected, so many students do not notice the problem until registration opens. Institutions outside the U.S. can take months to send documents, so request them early.

A document is official when the institution, exam board or testing agency sends it to NJIT directly. A document in a sealed, unopened envelope is also official. A credential evaluation is official when the NACES member sends it. A document that you forward yourself is not official.

HOW TO APPLY

Information sessions are optional, but we recommend attending one before you apply. Attendees receive a code that waives the $75 application fee.

Attend an Information Session and Receive a Fee Waiver Code

  1. Submit your application at connect.njit.edu/apply. Pay the $75 application fee or enter your fee waiver code. More than one term may be open, so check that you select the correct start term.
  2. Sign in to your status portal at connect.njit.edu/status.
  3. Upload every item on your checklist in the status portal. We cannot add documents sent by email to your application.
  4. Check the portal until every item shows as received.

After You Apply

Our review begins when your application is complete. For master's and graduate certificate programs, we release most decisions two to three weeks after the application is complete. Some applications go to program faculty for additional review, which takes longer.

A status of Under Review means you do not need to do anything. Your application is complete and is with our reviewers. We will contact you when we reach a decision, or sooner if we need more information. You do not need to request an update.

We send notices about missing documents to the email address on your application. Check that inbox and your status portal before you contact us about a pending decision. A missing document is the most common cause of delay.

AFTER ADMISSION: ENROLLMENT DEPOSIT, I-20 and F-1 Visa

Complete these steps in order. Each step depends on the one before it, so you cannot claim your UCID or request your I-20 until step 1 is complete.

  1. Pay your enrollment deposit. Pay the $500 enrollment deposit, also called the tuition deposit, at tuitiondeposit.njit.edu. We credit the deposit to your first tuition bill. Ph.D. admits with an NJIT funding award do not pay a deposit. Accepting the award completes this step, as explained in Ph.D. Applicants.
  2. Claim your UCID. Your UCID is your NJIT username. About 12 to 24 hours after your deposit posts, we email you instructions. This email goes to the personal email address on your application, not to an NJIT address. Claim your UCID at myucid.njit.edu.
  3. Request your Form I-20. You need the I-20 to apply for an F-1 student visa. Wait 12 to 24 hours after you claim your UCID. Then sign in at myglobal.njit.edu and complete the I-20 Request. Upload your passport and proof of financial support. Processing takes about seven business days after you upload all documents, if your funding meets the required amount. The Office of Global Initiatives sends your I-20 to your NJIT email address.
  4. Apply for your F-1 visa. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee at fmjfee.com. SEVIS is the U.S. government system that tracks international students. Complete the DS-160 online visa application at ceac.state.gov. Then schedule your visa interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
  5. Report your visa and complete orientation. Report your visa approval in myGlobal. Then complete F-1 International Student Essentials, the required online orientation course in Canvas.
  6. Register for classes. Meet with your academic advisor and register for at least 9 credits, the full-time minimum for F-1 students.

If you are in F-1 status at another U.S. school, ask that school to release your SEVIS record to NJIT. The Office of Global Initiatives issues your NJIT I-20 after the release.

The admitted student checklist covers the remaining steps, including arrival, housing and health requirements.

Deposit Refunds and Deferrals

The enrollment deposit is non-refundable unless you provide comprehensive official proof of a visa denial.

In all other cases, we defer your admission to a future term instead of refunding the deposit. This includes a change of plans, enrollment at another school or not getting a visa appointment in time. You may defer your admission one time. Contact your admissions counselor as early as possible to arrange a deferral.

Immigration Questions

The Office of Global Initiatives (OGI) issues your I-20 and advises on F-1 and J-1 status. Contact global@njit.edu or +1 973-596-2451.

The U.S. Department of State controls visa appointment availability. NJIT cannot expedite your appointment.

TUITION, SCHOLARSHIP AND FUNDING

Cost of Attendance

NJIT bills tuition one semester at a time. You do not pay for the full degree at once. For 2026-2027, the estimated cost of attendance for two semesters of full-time master's or graduate certificate study is $71,412.

Expense Estimated cost, 2026-2027
Tuition and fees $42,534
Living expenses $18,900
Other expenses, including health insurance, transportation, books and personal costs $9,978
Total $71,412

All amounts are estimates and can change. Current rates are on the Tuition and Costs page. You can pay from outside the U.S. through Flywire.

Merit Scholarships for Master's Students

We consider every admitted master's student for a merit scholarship automatically. You do not need to apply separately or ask to be considered. About 75 percent of Fall 2026 master's admits received a scholarship, averaging about $8,000 per year.

Awards are based on your GPA and on GRE or GMAT scores when you submit them. NJIT does not offer fully funded master's degrees, and need-based financial aid is not available to international students. Teaching and research assistantships are generally not available to master's students. You may work on campus up to 20 hours per week during the semester to help with costs.

For Ph.D. funding and costs, see Ph.D. Applicants.

Ph.D. APPLICANTS

Ph.D. (doctoral) admission differs from master's admission at several points. The academic department reviews your application and makes the decision, and Ph.D. students typically receive department funding. The rest of this page also applies to you, including the English requirements, transcripts, final official documents and the I-20 steps.

Ph.D. Deadlines and Review

Complete your application by December 15 for Fall entry or October 15 for Spring entry. Begin about nine months before your start term. To receive priority consideration for department funding, complete your application before the deadline.

The academic department sets the review timeline. Ph.D. review takes longer than master's review and varies by program.

Ph.D. Admission Requirements

Requirement Details
Academic record Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 or equivalent
Transcripts
  • From every college or university you attended
  • Proof of degree completion
  • No credential evaluation required
Resume Required
Statement of purpose Required
Letters of recommendation Three required
English proficiency
  • TOEFL iBT 4.0 (new scale) or 79 (previous scale)

  • GRE or GMAT required for Martin Tuchman School of Management
  • Optional for all other Ph.D. programs, where a strong score can strengthen your application
Portfolio Required for Hillier College of Architecture and Design applicants

If you enter with a bachelor's degree, you must complete at least 36 credits of coursework. If you enter with a master's degree, you must complete at least 12 credits. Some programs require more. Dissertation research adds time, so the total length of a Ph.D. varies by student.

Ph.D. Funding

Ph.D. students typically receive a funding package from their academic department. NJIT funding awards cover tuition, fees and health insurance, plus a stipend. We consider every admitted Ph.D. student for funding automatically. Academic departments also manage teaching and research assistantships, which go mainly to Ph.D. students.

If you do not receive an NJIT funding award, the estimated cost of attendance for two semesters of full-time Ph.D. study in 2026-2027 is $69,958.

After a Ph.D. Admission

If you receive an NJIT funding award, you do not pay the enrollment deposit. Accept your award first. After you accept, we send your official admission letter and instructions to claim your UCID and request your I-20. Then follow steps 2 to 6 in After Admission.

If you do not receive a funding award, pay the enrollment deposit and follow every step in After Admission.
