Program Details

The Environmental Sciences B.S. program focuses on the role of the physical science in the protection of the environment and pollution remediation. Ultimately, the program is designed to prepare graduates for professional positions in the environmental education and/or to continue their education at the graduate level.

The program will also prepare students to pursue positions related to the environment in the fields of law, business, sociology, health and political science. Students in the Environmental Science program are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities provided to students, such as research experience for undergraduates (REU), cooperative education and internships.

Students of the B.S. program will succeed in the following:

  • Research-based Inquiry: Students employ research methods appropriate to their disciplines.

  • Collaboration: Students work effectively in teams, applying multidisciplinary and global perspectives.

  • Professional Readiness: Students exhibit professional and civic responsibility, as well as knowledge and skills necessary for professional and personal growth.

What You Will Learn:

We aim for our students of the Environmental Science B.S. program to meet the following specific learning outcomes:

  • Problem-solving: Use observation and experimentation to investigate chemical phenomena and solve problems and demonstrate problem-solving skill through critical thinking and analysis.

  • Information Literacy and Scientific Writing: Identify, discovery, analyze and interpret scientific information obtained from the laboratory, computational data and library research. Demonstrate understanding of how to ethical and legal use of scientific information obtained through the laboratory, computational data and library research.

  • Critical Thinking: Speak effectively and accurately about scientific topics, issues, and problems in a formal and informal context. Use quantitative methods to describe and analyze chemical phenomena. Use technical skills and equipment to describe and quantify chemical phenomena.

  • Ethics: Recognize and discuss the social and ethical implications of chemical research and its technological applications to human problems. Demonstrate proper ethical and legal conduct during performing and writing scientific research.

  • Collaboration: Interact with others in a skilled, cooperative fashion to discuss issues and solve problems.

  • Basic Knowledge of Chemical Processes: Demonstrate an understanding of general chemistry. Demonstrate an understanding of general biology, environmental science, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, ecology, environmental chemistry, environmental biology, general microbiology, environmental toxicology and environmental analysis.

  • Chemical Safety: Demonstrate an understanding of the proper handling, dispensing and disposal of chemicals.
