Program Details

The B.S. in Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary program with the objective to provide students with a strong understanding of chemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, physics and computer sciences. Students in the Biochemistry program will learn theoretical fundamentals and laboratory skills necessary to understand the life processes. Students will also be exposed to the in-depth study of complex chemical changes that occur at the cellular level. Ultimately, students of the program will exhibit and/or engage in:

  • Professional & Ethical Conduct: Students will practice ethical research, professional conduct in collaborations and strong communication skill required to lead future projects.

  • Meaningful Research: Students will learn skills and tools in laboratory settings — gaining real-world experience in their chosen research focuses within biochemistry.

  • Academic Excellence: Students will excel in studying the theoretical fundamentals by which chemistry and life processes interrelate.

What You Will Learn:

While students in the Biochemistry B.S. program will learn and apply their knowledge in diverse areas of the chemical and biological sciences, we specifically aim for our students to meet the following learning outcomes:

  • In-depth knowledge of core concepts and principles of the biochemistry program, such as: chemical and three-dimensional structures of biological molecules, biological molecular interactions, cellular synthesis and degradation of biological molecules, cellular energy conservation and use, mechanisms to control and organize biological molecules for cellular activities, mechanisms of storage, transmission and expression of genetic information.

  • Ability to learn and stay current with biotechnology and biologic topics and discoveries today, such as those in genetic engineering, molecular biology, enzymology and microbiology.

  • Ability to draw from academic knowledge and laboratory experience to effectively collaborate and individually contribute in professional research laboratory settings.

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and experimental results in written technical reports, as well as in oral presentations for specialist and general audiences.

  • Ability to research, study and comprehend technical literature in the biological and chemical sciences that are related to their research focus.
