Ying Wu College of Computing FlexPath FAQ's

What are the additional FlexPath benefits for students admitted to YWCC MS degree programs?

  • Students admitted to any of the Ying Wu College of Computing’s eight MS degree programs listed above can begin full- or part-time study online during the Fall 2020 semester.  Students successfully completing a prescribed set of four courses (12 graduate credits) will earn an independent Graduate Certificate and the credits earned will also be applied toward their MS degree program of admission.
  • This graduate certificate option for FlexPath admission is also very useful for any student whose  letter of acceptance indicated as a condition of admission, completion of up to four “Must take” bridge courses.  This is normally the case for students with a non-Computing background. The bridge program courses are typically completed prior to the actual MS degree studies to prepare a student lacking all the required background.  However, successful completion of the four prescribed courses completing the Graduate Certificate will waive the bridge requirement condition of admission, which is a net gain for the student.
  • Graduate students choosing the FlexPath option for Fall 2020 receive a one-time scholarship equivalent to about $500 per credit enrolled.  So students choosing to begin full-time online study this fall who enroll in four graduate courses can save approximately $6,000 in tuition costs, earn a career-enhancing Graduate Certificate, waive any bridge courses that were a condition of admission, and be well of their way to completion of their MS degree.
  • Upon successful completion of the Fall 2020 “online” semester, students will be able to continue studies in-person at NJIT in the Spring 2021 semester (assuming a valid F-1 visa is in place prior to the start of the Spring 2021 semester).

I was accepted into YWCC MS program.  What courses are available for me in the FlexPath program?

What Graduate Certificate will I earn if I successfully complete the four prescribed courses?

  • Most students admitted to the MS degrees listed below will begin studies with four courses leading to the graduate certificate stated below.  Other options can be discussed with an academic advisor prior to registration.

I was accepted into a Graduate Certificate program.  What options are available for me?

  • FlexPath allows students admitted to Graduate Certificate programs and unable to arrive on campus by September 1, the option to begin full- or part-time study online during the Fall 2020 semester.  Graduate certificate admitted students choosing the FlexPath option to study online this fall will receive a one-time scholarship equivalent to about $500 per credit enrolled.  So if you choose to begin full-time study online this fall, enrolling in four graduate courses, you can save approximately $6,000 in tuition costs and fully complete the requirements for your Graduate Certificate of admission.  Students who have been guaranteed admission to an MS degree program upon successful completion of a graduate certificate program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher can then continue their MS degree studies in person at NJIT in Spring 2021 (assuming they receive a valid F-1 visa prior to the start of the Spring 2021 semester).

I was accepted to the MS in Bioinformatics. What FlexPath options are available for me?

  • Although there is no corresponding Graduate Certificate for the MS in Bioinformatics, a number of the core and elective courses for the degree program will be available online in Fall 2020.  Students admitted to the MS in Bioinformatics degree program may begin their studies online and take advantage of the Fall 2020 FlexPath scholarship.  Upon successful completion of the “online semester”, students continue in-person at NJIT in Spring 2021 (assuming a valid F-1 visa is in place). For further information, speak with an academic advisor.

I have specific questions on FlexPath and YWCC graduate programs. Who may I speak with?

  • If you have specific questions on FlexPath and YWCC graduate programs, please email: david.f.ullman@njit.edu, Director of Online Learning for YWCC.

Flex-Path Program

The Flex-Path program is ideal for admitted students who may be impacted by travel restrictions or visa delays. Students who participate in the Flex-Path program will have the ability to take courses online during the Spring 2023 semester and then continue their studies in-person at NJIT starting the Fall 2023 semester (assuming they complete their fall courses in good academic standing and receive a valid F-1 visa prior to the start of the fall semester).

Online courses are available to students who have been admitted to the following Master's degree and Graduate Certificate programs for the Spring 2023 semester.

Students planning to pursue on-campus or Flex Path study must confirm their plans and submit a deposit by January 15. Please complete the Fall 2023 options form in your admissions portal.  If you are hoping to attend in-person but would be interested in studying online if you are unable to arrive in time, please select this option. You will still have the option to pursue your studies on-campus if circumstances allow!

Students who enroll in the Flex Path program for the Spring 2023 semester will not require an I-20 at this time.  An I-20 will be issued for the semester in which you plan to enroll for on-campus study.  Students who plan to attend on-campus classes for the Fall 2023 semester must submit financial documents and the NJIT Application for I-20 dated AFTER September 1, 2023.  We will begin to issue I-20’s for Spring 2024 beginning in October.

Students who will enroll in Flex Path who have already received an NJIT I-20 will be issued an updated I-20 upon submission of updated financial documents dated after September 1, 2023.  The current fall 2023 I-20 cannot be used for future semesters.

The per-credit cost for international students is $1,907.

Academic scholarships for the Spring 2023 semester will not apply to the Flex Path program.    Scholarships that were previously granted for on-campus study will be carried forward to commence with the first semester on-campus.

Please complete the Spring 2023 options form in your application portal and indicate your intent to enroll in Flex Path. You must submit a tuition deposit by January 15 and complete the virtual orientation program as instructed by our Office of Global Initiatives. Course registration will take place in January.

Commencement 2020

NJIT Community Members,

The end of the spring semester is typically a joyous time for our graduating students who are preparing to receive their degrees at commencement, a celebration of a student’s transition from university to professional life. Unfortunately, this year’s graduates have needed to remain physically apart from one another when they should be enjoying the culmination of their NJIT journey together.

This is disappointing to all of us and, sadly, we are unable to deliver our traditional May commencement ceremonies due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on large gatherings. Current circumstances have forced us to depart from our annual gatherings at the Prudential Center and the WEC and to think creatively about how best to acknowledge the accomplishments of the Class of 2020 with their friends and loved ones. We, therefore, have committed to providing both a virtual commencement in a timely manner and an in-person celebration at such time as it is deemed safe to do so. Today, I write to announce that NJIT will host its virtual commencement at 4 pm on Friday, June 12, 2020, on the NJIT website (njit.edu).

To the Class of 2020, I extend the university’s congratulations. Although you graduate into a world coping with a global pandemic and its financial repercussions, better days are ahead. You have accomplished much in your time at NJIT, and the lessons you have learned as well as the friendships you have forged will help you on the road ahead.

I also wish to express the university’s most sincere regrets that you will not experience a typical commencement at the end of this semester. Please be assured that the NJIT Commencement Committee is striving to provide the best possible virtual experience, which will include academic regalia and personalized videos of our graduates wearing their regalia as part of the ceremony. In order to accomplish this goal, the virtual ceremony needed to be moved to the June date because the vendors providing commencement regalia have seen their operational capabilities limited by the COVID-19 pandemic and are not able to ship the attire to our graduates in time for a May ceremony.

For the members of the Class of 2020, I encourage you to visit our Commencement website (commencement.njit.edu), where you can order your regalia and submit the correct pronunciation of your name between April 29 - May 13. Additionally, you may submit a celebratory video wearing your regalia once the attire has been shipped to your residence. All candidate videos must be submitted between May 14 - May 28.

I encourage members of the Class of 2020 to please visit commencement.njit.edu periodically for the most up-to-date information on the commencement ceremony. If you have any questions after reviewing the website, please email us at commencement@njit.edu.

Congratulations, graduates, on your accomplishments. Our pride in you is immense, and we are confident in the profound and positive ways in which you will impact the world in which we live as you leave NJIT. We will celebrate you as best we can on June 12, and we look forward to a future date when we will be able to gather in person and acknowledge this milestone.

Thank you all, and please stay well.

Sincerely,

Fadi P. Deek

Provost and Senior Executive Vice President
