RECEIVING REQUESTS

  1. Requests for course evaluation reports are initiated by the Provost’s Office as part of the Promotion and Tenure review process.
  2. Upon request and after receiving the candidate’s CV, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) prepares a course evaluation report summarizing the candidate’s teaching effectiveness.
  3. Requests from the Provost’s Office take priority.
  4. Course evaluation reports are prepared once per review cycle.
  5. Faculty members may also access their historical course evaluation reports directly through the Explorance Blue platform: https://blue.njit.edu/blue

PREPARING THE REPORT

  1. Course evaluation data are drawn from official NJIT course evaluation records administered through Explorance Blue.
  2. The primary metric used in the report is: Item 8h – “Overall teaching effectiveness of the instructor.”
  3. Reports include course evaluation data spanning the most recent 10 years, based on available institutional records.
  4. To protect student confidentiality and maintain statistical reliability: Course sections with an enrollment of three or fewer students are excluded from the report and will not be shared.

CREATING THE REPORT

The report is generated at the section level and includes the following information for each course taught by the candidate:

  1. Semester taught
  2. Course title
  3. Course delivery mode
  4. Course enrollment
  5. Course department average teaching effectiveness score (Item 8h)
  6. Course college average teaching effectiveness score (Item 8h)
  7. NJIT overall teaching effectiveness score (Item 8h)
  8. Individual overall teaching effectiveness score (Item 8h)

Reports reflect course evaluation data available as of the date the report is generated.

CANDIDATE REVIEW AND CORRECTIONS

  1. If a candidate believes that the report contains an error or discrepancy, they may notify OIE for review.
  2. OIE will verify the underlying course evaluation records and update the report if corrections are warranted.

SUBMITTING THE REPORT

  1. Once completed, the course evaluation report is submitted to the Provost’s Office and the Promotion and Tenure Committee.
  2. Additional information may be provided upon request from the Provost’s Office or the P&T Committee.

DATA LIMITATIONS

  1. Course evaluation scores reflect student perceptions of teaching effectiveness and should be interpreted in conjunction with other evidence of teaching performance included in the course evaluation survey results and candidate’s dossier.
  2. Participation in course evaluations is voluntary, and response rates may vary across courses, semesters, academic units, and instructional formats. Lower response rates may affect the representativeness of the results. When interpreting course evaluation scores, reviewers are encouraged to consider course enrollment size, response rates, course delivery mode, and other contextual factors that may influence student participation in course evaluations. For a more comprehensive analysis, the committee may review individual cases using the information available in the Course Evaluation Analytical Dashboard.
