Program Details

Our program educational objectives are reflected in the achievements of our recent alumni. 

  1. Research and/or Practice: Alumni will successfully engage in research and/or practice of civil engineering within industry, government, and private practice, working toward sustainable solutions in one or more technical specialty including construction, environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources. Alumni will be able to synthesize technical knowledge of engineering analysis and design to identify, formulate and solve problems of professional interest and importance.
  2. Professional Growth: Alumni will advance their skills through innovation, professional growth and development activities such as research and doctoral study in engineering, professional registration, and continuing education. 
  3. Service: Alumni will perform service to society and the engineering profession through membership and participation in professional societies, government, educational institutions, civic organizations, and humanitarian endeavors.

What You Will Learn:

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  1. Specify or design and experiment to meet a need, conduct the experiment, and analyze and explain the resulting data;
  2. Identify, formulate, and solve complex civil engineering problems by selecting and applying appropriate tools and techniques; and
  3. Synthesize advanced technical knowledge in a traditional or emerging area of knowledge in a specialized area of civil engineering.

Teaches managerial aspects of contracting and the study of an individual firm in relation to the entire construction industry. 

What You Will Learn:

Students in the Construction Management Graduate Certificate Program will learn a wide range of leadership and management skills in addition to the following skills: 

  • Construction cost estimating (computerized takeoff and estimating techniques, financial and cost reporting, indices, profit factors and more). 
  • Project implementation and progress control. 
  • Facility maintenance (planning/control of facilities use, utility management, personnel administration, budgets and costs, and more). 
  • Legal aspects of construction (contractor/engineer/owner responsibilities, subcontracts and third-party liability, code compliance, insurance, and bonds).

  2. Verify and justify the solution to a complex civil engineering problem, including the use of appropriate tools and techniques;
  3. Develop and evaluate new, advanced technical knowledge in a specialized area of civil engineering; and
  4. Synthesize and explain the relevance and application of new, advanced technical knowledge in both technical and non-technical terms.

The mission of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is to educate a diverse student body to be employed in the engineering profession, to encourage research and scholarship among our faculty and students and to promote service to the engineering profession and society. Our program objectives are reflected in the achievements of our recent alumni in these areas:  

  • Engineering Practice: Alumni will successfully engage in the practice of civil engineering within industry, government, and private practice, working toward sustainable solutions in a wide array of technical specialties including construction, transportation, water resources and environmental, geotechnical and structural engineering
  • Professional Growth: Alumni will advance their skills through professional growth and development activities such as graduate study in engineering, research and development, professional registration and continuing education; some graduates will transition into other professional fields such as business and law through further education.  
  • Service: Alumni will perform service to society and the engineering profession through membership and participation in professional societies, government, educational institutions, civic organizations, charitable giving and other humanitarian endeavors.

What You Will Learn:

By the time they graduate from the Civil Engineering program, our students should have acquired the following:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science and mathematics
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental and economic factors
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental and societal contexts
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks and meet objectives
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
