Spring 2026 - EHS Training – Updated 01/16/2026
Training Instructions: The following is the Spring 2026 training schedule for the department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). If you have any questions, please email us at healthandsafety@njit.edu or call us at (973) 596-3059.
Lab Safety Training: Online Lab Safety Training takes approximately 2 hours to complete and is intended for returning students, faculty, and staff working in NJIT laboratories. New students, faculty, and staff working in NJIT laboratories must complete in-person training. Training is required prior to the commencement of research in NJIT laboratories. The Lab Safety Training session will cover Hazard Communication, Chemical Hygiene, Laboratory Hazards, Emergency Response, and Waste Management. Please complete all modules and the required quiz with a passing score of 70%.
Registration for in-person lab safety training is not required. Seating is available on a first come first serve basis.

Laboratory Safety Training

Biological Safety and BBP Training: Biological Safety and BBP Training is available for researchers and others who may handle, store, manipulate and/or dispose biologic and recombinant materials. The training provides a review of biological safety and bloodborne pathogen exposure control principles, practices, and guidelines as required by the CDC/NIH Biological Safety Guidelines (BMBL); the NIH Recombinant DNA Guidelines; and the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard. This training is required for all personnel who work with or may be potentially exposed to human blood, blood products, human tissues, human body fluids, human cells lines (including those obtained from commercial sources) as well as recombinant materials.

Laser Safety Training:
Laser safety training takes approximately 1 hour to complete and is intended for students, faculty and staff who will be working with lasers. Attendees should also attend Lab Safety Training (see above).
Laser Safety training sessions will be scheduled based on demand. Please email Environmental Health and Safety (healthandsafety@njit.edu) and Payam Ghanbari (payam.ghanbari@njit.edu) with the following information.

Radiation Safety Training:
Radiation safety training takes approximately 1 hour to complete and is intended for students, faculty and staff who will be working with ionizing radiation generating equipment, sealed sources, or loose material of ionizing radiation (X-ray machines, Ni63, etc.). Attendees should also attend Lab Safety Training (see above)
Radiation Safety training is offered once per year in a large classroom setting and then throughout the year in small groups as needed. Please email Environmental Health and Safety (healthandsafety@njit.edu) and Payam Ghanbari (payam.ghanbari@njit.edu) with the following information.

Hazard Communication (HazCom) Training:
Also known as NJ right-to-know training. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration mandate 29 CFR 1910.1200, states that organizations producing and using hazardous materials must provide employees with information and training on the proper handling and use of these materials. This training is covered during the first hour of Lab Safety Training (see above). This training could also be scheduled separately for individual departments. Please contact healthandsafety@njit.edu regarding this training.
Industrial and Shop Safety:
Industrial/Shop Safety training takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to complete and is intended for new and returning students, faculty and staff who will be working (or taking classes) in NJIT shops or industrial settings, e.g., non-lab settings. The Shop Safety training session will cover Right to Know, Hazard Communication, General Shop Safety, Fire Safety, Electrical Safety, Emergency Response, and Universal Waste Management.
