Every year, the Learning Communities invite applicants to apply for the Peer Mentor positions for the following school year. More detailed information on the description of the position and complete roles/responsibilities of a peer mentor is provided on the application form.
Learning Communities mentors are positive role models for incoming first-year students. They aim to assist incoming students with adapting to university life as well as with their academic success. In order to be a mentor, the following requirements must be met:
Mentors must be matriculated as full-time undergraduate
NJIT students for the duration of the contract: from August to the following May
Learning Communities duties are expected to take priority over other social or work commitments
Maintain good disciplinary standing with the university and a 2.5 GPA or above
Responsibilities:
Be a positive role model to incoming first year students
Participate in the facilitation and instruction of First Year Seminar with the guidance of the seminar Instructor
Work with a small group of Peer Mentors on one (or more) committees dedicated to hosting various events in the LC lounge (i.e. social, academic, professional, wellness, etc.) for first-year students
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of your department, major and NJIT
Share about academic opportunities and resources as relevant to students' major
Participate in and assist with the NSO 2.0 (late August), College 101 & 201, Convocation, and/or Open House events
Acquaint new students with campus services, activities, events and facilities
Assist, lead and implement various LC related events, activities and programs
Be available to work, on average, 7 hours per week (including mandatory bi-weekly staff meetings meetings, committee work, class time with students, etc.)
Complete a formal evaluation of LC Program
The application for the 2026-2027 academic year will be available as of February 3rd 2026.
