FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs):
Why should I request a teaching consultation?
Instructors request consultations for many reasons. You might want a fresh perspective on your course, help trying a new teaching approach, or just someone to talk through ideas or challenges with. These conversations can spark new insights and help improve your teaching, while also integrating evidence-based practices.
Making small, ongoing changes to your course is a normal part of teaching. We all learn and grow through feedback. The CEIE is here to support that process.
What is a consultation? How does the consultation process work?
Instructors will pick a 45 minute time slot using this link: and select a topic to discuss during the meeting. We have provided some common topics above, but you are free to discuss any teaching-related topic. An email will be sent regarding your appointment details. Each session will be informal and discussion-based, allowing you to freely share your thoughts concluding with action items, a plan for implementation, and an exit survey.
Who are consultations for?
Anyone involved in teaching—faculty, lecturers, graduate teaching assistants, or instructional staff—regardless of experience level. Whether you're new to teaching or a seasoned educator, consultations support your continued growth.
Will this affect my tenure/promotion?
No. Consultations are formative, confidential, and non-evaluative. Our goal is to support your development, not to assess or report on your teaching.
Do I need to prepare anything in advance?
Not necessarily. If you have materials you want to review (like a syllabus, assignment, or teaching observation), feel free to bring them. But we’re happy to start with just a conversation and provide more in-depth follow-ups as needed.
Is there a cost?
No cost–All NJIT faculty, lecturers, adjuncts, and graduate teaching assistants can schedule a consultation with the CEIE.
Can I bring a colleague or team?
Yes. If you have a group interested in a similar pedagogical topic, it can be helpful to include those individuals in your session. For example, a course coordinator may want to have instructors join in discussing a specific course or teaching topic.
Can I request a classroom observation or peer feedback?
Yes! The CEIE will soon offer classroom observations and feedback. More to come!
