Learn MoreAbout the Office
Led by Chief Officer Dr. Angela Garretson, the Office of Public and Community Affairs (OPCA) at NJIT serves as the university’s central liaison to government, civic, and community stakeholders, primarily focused on Newark, Essex County, and the broader region. The office plays a university-wide role in advancing NJIT’s mission as a leading public polytechnic, anchor institution, and partner in inclusive urban and economic development.
OPCA is responsible for fostering relationships with elected officials, public agencies, school districts, nonprofits, and anchor coalitions. The office leads and coordinates NJIT’s involvement in civic initiatives, regional partnerships, and community-engaged programming, ensuring the university is recognized as a trusted contributor to the social and economic progress of Newark and Essex County.
In addition to government and community relations, OPCA designs and supports programs that connect students, faculty, and staff with opportunities for public service, education access, and leadership development. Through its work, the office amplifies NJIT’s public mission, enhances institutional visibility, and supports meaningful collaborations that drive equity, innovation, and civic progress across the region.
