Faculty-Led Study Abroad Courses
Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs are rigorous academic courses designed with an international component. Much like attending classes at NJIT, these courses maintain high academic standards while offering students the opportunity to engage with global perspectives by studying in another country.
There are several models for Faculty-Led programs:
-
Hybrid Model: A significant portion of the course is taught on NJIT’s Newark campus, followed by a short-term study abroad experience at a destination relevant to the course.
-
Fully Abroad Model: The entire course is conducted overseas, immersing students in the host country’s culture and academic environment from start to finish.
These programs are offered throughout the academic year, including Spring & Summer 2026, giving students flexibility in how they incorporate global learning into their NJIT degree.
For eligibility details, see “Am I Eligible?”
A course abroad is a NJIT course conducted fully abroad. Students must complete the separate application process prior to class registration in order to travel abroad.
Application & Eligibility
Students must first complete an application process before being permitted to register for a Faculty-Led Study Abroad course. If you are interested, be sure to communicate your intent directly with your Faculty Leader so they are aware of your plans.
General eligibility requirements include:
-
A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
-
Good academic standing at NJIT
Eligibility may vary by program. To confirm your status, you are encouraged to:
-
Attend an upcoming information session
-
Speak directly with the Faculty Leader
-
Review the program application
-
Or contact the Study Abroad Advisor at studyabroad@njit.edu
Depending upon the program, you can upload your passport application receipt in place of a passport so that you can apply for the program. Let the Study Abroad Department know, and the team will work with you.
Ask your Faculty Leaders about programs in the department. Typically, your Leaders are already 12 to 9 months before the program start date to help you prepare the documents and finances needed. Please reach out to us with your questions.
Depending on the program, you may apply after confirming with the Faculty Leader that you meet the necessary prerequisites, or by attending an information session to learn how to access the application.
If the program is connected to a course for academic credit, you must first confirm with the Faculty Leader that you are eligible to enroll in that course. Once confirmed, you can proceed by submitting the Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program Application through the Study Abroad office.
Testimonials
“I went to my Summer Study Abroad in Austria and I came back with 70,000 photos. As
a student I couldn’t be happier with how much value this experience added to my
architectural view and understanding but also left me with an unforgettable summer.”
-Isabella Gil
"Studying abroad in Austria with my class was an enriching experience that broadened
my design perspective. Vienna's historic architecture and cultural vibrancy, Krems'
picturesque landscapes, and Innsbruck's Alpine charm provided diverse inspirations for
our studio projects. Immersing myself in this unique environment not only enhanced my
architectural skills but also left me with unforgettable memories."
-Valeria Gomez
“This once in a lifetime experience of studying abroad has taught me how to appreciate
the opportunities that I have. It has also helped me recognize what I want in my life and
has inspired me to have fun while doing challenging things. Not everything has to be so
demanding if you just relax while doing it :) “
-Angelica Valinoti
“It was wonderful to be able to work in the studio at Newark and then work on it in
Austria with a different perspective after experiencing the site"
- Maitri Amin
“I had a wonderful time on the Austria study abroad program this summer. There was
amazing food, great views, and a fun time experiencing different cultures! I think this
studio gave us an experience that was similar to what we would experience in a firm
when it comes to working alongside and getting feedback from a real client.”
- Mateo Fuentes
“My favorite part about the trip was the biking tour and hiking the alps.”
-Albina Zhaku
