- Consult with Student Financial Aid Services and complete the exit interview. Financial Aid will be recalculated based on the date of withdrawal. Any balance remaining is the responsibility of the student.
- Consult with the Office of the Bursar regarding any financial obligations
- Get the permission of the Dean of Students if the withdrawal is for medical reasons
- International students must consult with the Office of Global Initiatives. A change in enrollment status may impact immigration status.
The following acts do not constitute a withdrawal:
- Nonattendance
- Discontinuing attendance
- Nonpayment

Medical Withdrawal
If a student is leaving the University for medical reason, the student must go to the Dean of Students Office to complete a withdrawal form. Any questions, please refer to the Dean of Students Office.

Partial Withdrawal
Students must withdraw from a course using Highlander Pipeline. The date of partial withdrawal will determine the amount of tuition liability, as outlined in the refunds schedule listed on the academic calendar. Withdrawals requested via phone call or e-mail will not be honored. After the 100% refund period ends, refunds are for tuition only, all fees are to be paid by the student.
Withdrawal Grades
The following notation will appear on the academic transcripts: "W (Withdrawn)” for each withdrawn course.
Military withdrawal - Call to Service
Students called to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States will be allowed to withdraw from the university without penalty upon presenting an official copy of their military training or deployment orders to the Office of the Registrar - Veterans & Military Students Affairs. This must be done by the time a student is required to stop attending classes.
Students who withdraw before midterm will receive normal withdrawal notations (e.g., W, Withdrew grades) on the transcript. After midterm, students may, with the permission of the appropriate instructor, exercise one of two additional options: 1) receive final grades earned as of the date of withdrawal, if work of sufficient quantity and quality has been completed to warrant a passing grade for the term; or 2) receive an Incomplete grade for one or more courses if the work can be completed before the end of the following semester. Students who exercise one of these two options are subject to all other university policies regarding grades and will not receive a tuition refund for those courses in which a final grade or Incomplete is assigned.
The University will refund 100% of tuition and fees for the term that the student departs if the student withdraws from the course(s). For students who have room and/or board contracts in force, the cost of room and/or board will be reimbursed on a pro-rated basis.
While on active duty, the university will maintain registration until the student’s orders are completed. This will allow for seamless readmission into the university.
The University will refund 100% of tuition and fees for the term that a military spouse or dependent must withdraw due to redeployment or relocation, orders must be provided.
Exiting NJIT
Request to Exit NJIT: EXIT FORM
Navigating Your Path
NJIT understands that circumstances can change, and you might need to adjust your academic plans. NJIT is committed to providing the support needed to understand your options based on your situation. Please see below for explanations of different options you have when your plans change.
Understanding the Terms: Withdraw vs. Exit NJIT
- Withdraw: Refers to de-registering from one or more courses while remaining an active student at NJIT. You may still want to attend other classes and semesters.
- Exit NJIT: Refers to completely ending your enrollment at NJIT. Examples include withdrawing from your courses, or completing them, and not enrolling in future semesters at NJIT for the foreseeable future or transferring to another institution.
Exiting NJIT: The Intent to Exit Process
If you are considering transferring to another institution, or you are no longer interested in continuing your studies at NJIT, complete the Intent to Exit NJIT process.
Note: Students that were suspended or dismissed do not need to complete this process.
To begin the Intent to Exit process, please fill out this form. If you need guidance on the process, please review these instructions (PDF).
Make sure to read carefully as you submit your request to exit NJIT permanently, as there are follow-up steps to take before you step away. These steps will be listed before and after you submit your form, and you will receive an email with this information.
Students who do a total withdrawal during the semester will be subject to the tuition-only refund policy posted on the Academic Calendar and are responsible for any outstanding charges due to the withdrawal. Your financial aid may need to be adjusted based on the last date of attendance marked in the form, according to federal and university guidelines, found
here.
Here are the next steps to formally exit NJIT, if applicable:
- Schedule: If you are currently registered and intend to leave NJIT immediately, drop/withdraw from all courses as soon as possible on Highlander Pipeline and do not register for the upcoming term.
- my.NJIT.edu > Registration and Degree Plan > Course Registration (Banner) > Register for Classes > Select the Term > View the drop-down menu near your courses (bottom right of screen), select drop or withdraw (will depend if before/after add/drop) for each, then click submit.
- Here is the academic calendar with the refund policy.
- Balance: Pay your balance as soon as possible. Important note: official transcripts cannot be released with an outstanding balance. Use the appropriate payment link located within the Bursar - Student Account card.
- Financial Aid: If you receive federal, state or institutional aid, contact finaid@njit.edu to discuss potential financial implications as your aid may be subject to change and it may also impact your future eligibility.
- Residence Life/Gourmet Dining: Your housing contract will be terminated as of the last date of attendance marked in the form, and you will be billed a cancellation fee in accordance to the terms and conditions of your contract found here. If you have an active meal plan, it will also be terminated as of the last date of attendance marked in the form. Contact the Residence Life Office at reslife@njit.edu or 973-596-3039 if you have questions.
- Medical Withdrawal: All students withdrawing for medical or health-related reasons must submit a request online through ServiceNow before the final exam period of any semester.
- Transcript: Request an official transcript through National Student Clearinghouse.
- Access to your NJIT email: Forward any important emails and information to another account since you may lose access to your NJIT email.
- Exit Survey: Complete the exit survey.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss your concerns, please contact persist@njit.edu.
